Artist Statement

Do-it-yourself is the new self-help. Using everyday objects from the home-improvement megastore, my work examines the ways we present ourselves and the ways we are perceived. If our personalities are nothing but a series of defenses, how do we build and add to those barriers over time? When do the walls we hide behind end up revealing more about us than they protect?

I am interested in constructions that teeter, bend, sag and sway. Whether materials are stacked, strapped or bungeed together, I relish the place where control and chaos collide.

Interiors are also important. Influenced by pop psychology, theories of identity and O, The Oprah Magazine, I am curious about notions of authenticity and explanations for why our true selves seem always just out of reach. Renovations never end.
